How can a work of art painted in 1533 be a ‘burning issue’ of our time? At first sight, Holbein’s Ambassadors doesn’t appear relevant to our society at all. But consider this. Is a discussion on the nature of civilisation relevant today? I think many parties would agree that it is. What is the content of that civilisation? Even more specifically, what does Western civilisation actually mean? This article hopes to approach an answer to these questions by taking a close look at a painting produced when the character of Western civilisation was first being shaped. Indeed, rather than discuss the painting as a whole, it merely asks why one object in that painting was included in it by its artist. Hopefully, by the end of this article, the reader will have a better picture of what constitutes civilisation. In many ways, given its history, it is a miracle that this picture escaped being consigned to the bonfire. Now this image may help us address a burning issue of our time.
